A young woman sets alone on the beach. She gazes out across the water. The rolling waves stretch out on the sands of the shoreline. Seagulls circle overhead. The setting sun sets the sky ablaze. All is right with the world. Then comes a flood of peace. With a sense of euphoria, she says aloud, “What an awesome God.”
In a hospital waiting room an anxious crowd awaits a word from the surgeon. They pray. As best they can, they comfort one another. They talk about all manner of things. They try to deal with the tension. The doctor enters the room. He says with a smile, “The tumor was not cancerous. She is going to be alright.” Tears flood their eyes as each one from their hearts prays, “Thank you Jesus.”
A hurting couple, weighed down with burdens, enters the foyer of a local church. In that moment they can feel the overwhelming presence of God. They don’t understand. They don’t know what to make of it. They find their seats. The music stirs their souls. As the pastor delivers the sermon, the conviction of the Holy Spirit falls upon their open hearts. Repentance brings deliverance and a sense of a fresh start. They are in awe of what God has done.
A Pastor counsels with a young man who struggles with many things. At first he doesn’t know what to say. He listens to the man’s desperate situation. He wants to help, but how? At just the right time the words begin to flow. It is as if the Holy Spirit has taken over and is speaking through the pastor. The presence of God is so thick in the room that glory bumps cover his arms. In his mind he cries out to God, “Thank you Lord for giving me the words.
A prayer warrior sets in a special place to meet with God. He prays about many things. He looses track of the time. His requests turn to praise and worship. The Spirit of God falls upon him. An overwhelming presence takes his breath away. A part of him doesn’t want this moment to end, but there is only so much a man can stand. When he finishes praying, there is great joy in his heart because he has had a personal encounter with God.
Another man is alone in prayer. God has been working in his life but there is something still missing. He cries out to God, “Whatever it is you want from me, I will do it. Just tell me what it is.” Then the man hears the voice of God calling him into the gospel ministry.
What do all of these people have in common? Each one had an experience where they were caught up in the sphere of the glory of God. Something happened. It was real. They made a personal connection with the God of glory. It is not something to take lightly. For many it forever changes their lives. But sadly for others, these encounters with God become fleeting moments soon forgotten because of the cares of the world.
How much better would it be if we could learn to not take His reaching out to us for granted? What if, no matter what goes on in the world around us, we could learn to live in His glory? What if we had His powerful presence at work in our every decision and action?
I invite you to join me in a quest to understand what the Bible says about the glory of God. Over the coming months I hope to share with you the fruits of my study so that together we might learn how to live in His glory. I appreciate your comments and insights on this subject and will post all appropriate responses.
